Use cases, other DV profiles and purpose

I'm a software engineer, but I am admittedly baffled by the sketchy information about DV profiles online and how they interact with specific devices. I'm drawn to this project in part because I am cursed enough to have a Mac Mini "server" in my pipeline, which means I am a glutton for punishment, and this project looks like a possible salvation.

I am keenly aware that this issue is broad and may be outside the purview of this project, but actually I think that's also the point in this issue. I'm not the typical "how to do what I want with your thing" poster -- but at the same time, it could be highly useful to add any insights to the readme to help people understand if their use cases align with this project. Because as you undoubtedly know, this particular landscape is incredibly messy, with disparate clusters of tooling for different OS's and with different capabilities.

So I'm raising this mostly to talk about what I think is a typical confusion, and maybe it could be addressed briefly in the readme to help people disambiguate what it achieves and make an informed choice . In short: a brief mention of the high-level typical use cases or "purpose" of needing to do this specific transition between profile 7 and 8 would be great.

I'm aware one of these use cases is simply because profile 7 has poor device support, compared to 8 (I think). Which makes sense, but I'm left with some questions that more than likely further indicate my level of understanding 😛:

• What's the use case for removing DV CMv4.0?
• Since the project is specifically targeting 7 --> 8, it makes me wonder about conversion of other profiles like 5 to 8. Possibly the implication is I shouldn't care about that; I won't usually need to care; or that there's some limitation. I know profile 5 does not include fallback. Is such a conversion from 5 possible with fallback (even to sdr?). Perhaps the answer to this is simply that you do have to care but this project isn't for that, which is of course fine. Perhaps 7 is whats usually "out there" and so this solves a high % of peoples needs? As you can tell, I have some inkling, but I'm also not fully sure and I'm advocating for maximal clarity for us noobs.
• Why not target 8.4? Certain there reasons, but again it's just things that come to mind and myself and probs others will be grateful for you to impart your (tbh, rare) insights as use cases on the readme for the typical person trying to understand the mess that is dv.
