Consider compressing the test data

The test data files for currently occupy ~2MB of space and their lines are counted in PRs. Since the data is ASCII and in json format it should be highly compressible. Indeed a local test showed that this can be shrunk by ~8x to ~250KB. We should consider storing this data in compressed form and unpacking it for testing.
