There was a problem with the calculation of the content hash for noir/noir-repo, because cache_content_hash uses git ls-tree to list objects, and because noir-repo is a subdirectory it was seen as effectively empty, short circuiting the builds. The PR changes this so that the content hash is actually calculated in the noir-repo, where things are visible:

  • Add REPO_ROOT to ci3/cache_content_hash to specify the directory where the git commands should run, so that we can evaluate paths in the noir-repo
  • Split noir/.rebuild_patterns[_tests] into noir/.rebuild_patterns and noir/.noir-repo.rebuild_patterns[_tests], with the latter having their paths modified so they are rooted at noir/noir-repo.
  • Change noir/bootstrap.sh hash to calculate multiple hashes, passing the correct context with the different pattern files, and hashing the final results together with hash_str.
  • Add noir/noir-repo.patch to noir/.rebuild_patterns, but not noir/noir-repo-ref, because that would be equivalent to treating any change in the noir-repo as cache invalidation, almost defeating the purpose of .noir-repo.rebuild_patterns (although having it would still rebuild after new commits have been added to the noir-repo, it would also rebuild if nothing just the docs changed between two nightly builds)
  • Change all bootstrap.sh scripts where e.g. ../../noir/.rebuild_patterns was used directly to call noir/bootstrap.sh hash instead.

Original approach

The first commits in this PR took a different approach, trying to hide the context switching in cache_content_hash itself, by changing it to:

  • look for sub repositories in the .rebuild_patterns, e.g. ^noir/noir-repo/.git,
  • loop through all such sub repositories, (starting from the top level .git which is implicitly included in the loop)
  • filter the rebuild patterns to the ones that start with the repository path as a prefix
  • calculate the hash of the files that match in that repository
  • aggregate the hashes of across all the repos

The benefit of this approach in retrospect was that if e.g. avm-transpiler/bootstrap.sh called cache_content_hash .rebuild_patterns ../../noir/.rebuild_patterns then it would have kept working, because ../../noir/.rebuild_patterns had all the information needed to pick the right context.

It was judged that cache_content_hash should not be burdened with this kind of responsibility, so now we have to be vigilant and know when to call <project>/bootstrap.sh hash and when we're okay to just use <project>/.rebuild_patterns directly.

Chatted with @ludamad about (possibly) best approach. In summary:

  • cache_content_hash should check in its arg loop if is directory -d && <path>/.git is also a dir. If so reuse the "dirty working tree" logic to decide if we return disable-cache.
  • After cloning noir-repo, install a precommit hook (and maybe post-checkout for if user changes ref?). Every time we commit to noir, the commit hook will fully regenerate the patch folder (apparently @TomAFrench has a wip for multi-patches), starting from the noir-ref up to HEAD.
  • The only .rebuild-patterns needed r.e. the subrepo are the noir-ref and the patch folder.

This should ensure that a dirty working tree results in a rebuild, and also if there are any commits the patch folder is always up-to-date, and will also trigger a rebuild if necessary.

@aakoshh Does this make sense? See any issues with it?

It sounds a bit complicated to be honest. I also don't necessarily want to put things into the patch: I'm working on a feature branch, e.g. af/msgpack-codegen, where I'm changing the code in the noir-repo which I pointed at the af/msgpack-codegen of Noir itself, and also changing Barretenberg, and once I'm happy that it works with bb then I just want to push back to that feature branch, not turn it into a patch that applies to all other aztec-packages branches, because it only works with this particular Noir branch. NB as long as I don't delete noir-repo I can switch to a different aztec-packages branch and come back, it will check out my local af/msgpack-codegen with the commits I already have added.

I would rather just do the version where I modify noir/bootstrap.sh to call cache_content_hash multiple times: once in noir and once in noir-repo, but passing the root variable so it can source its dependencies. That is a straight forward way clearly visible in the script, with nothing hidden in hooks.

On a different note, I added the noir-repo-ref to the .rebuild_patterns, but I do wonder if it's actually the right thing to do: there are over 20 different patterns staring with ^noir/noir_repo/; if they did not matter, then we could just have had a single ^noir/noir-repo to capture everything under it, rather than all those paths. By adding the noir-repo-ref, we have a blanket change that includes everything (including docs for example), instead of the more granular control the list allows.

In the grand scheme of things it probably doesn't make a difference as some code will surely change, and rebuilding even if nothing changed isn't a big deal, but just conceptually, I think the list based content hash is nice, and we can make it work.

cache_content_hash should check in its arg loop if is directory -d && /.git is also a dir.

I thought about this, but decided against it because nothing in the .rebuild_patterns was actually the GitHub repo itself, so if you mean this:

for path in $(rebuild_patterns); do
  if [ -d $path && -d $path/.git ]; then
    ...
  fi
done

then I thought what we really have to deal with is for example:

noir/noir-repo/foo/bar/qux
noir/noir-repo/spam/eggs
noir/scripts/test.sh
noir/bootstrap.sh

One would have to take all prefixes to look for .git in any subdirectory, which would needlessly slow down all calls to cache_content_hash. That's why I thought I'd give it a hint by listing noir/noir-repo/.git, and maybe sort it so it looks more intuitive than it is now.

I'm fine with the current set of changes except that right now when things transitively depend on noir they use a different hash than noir itself?

Ah, thanks for raising this, indeed I see avm-transpiler calls hash=$(cache_content_hash ../noir/.rebuild_patterns .rebuild_patterns), and so do many others.

Yeah, this is why I thought the trick with including the noir/noir-repo/.git path could transparently solve this, even though I wasn't aware of transitive dependencies expressed this way. I'll change the formulas to call noir/bootstrap.sh hash.

I see aztec-up does it that way already, calling to the yarn-project.
